Oboe gives advice about applying to college and allows the viewer to explore about her life and unconventional thought process. This project taught me about developing characters voices, structuring arcs, producing videos efficiently, and that the application process to college is not that bad. So even though she does not really teach her viewers how to apply to college as she says in her bio, she definitely gave me the skills required to get there.
Origin
I created Oboe and her youtube channel senior year of high school after leaving a completely useless meeting about applying to college. The only parts of the application the school counselors helped us on were the self explanatory parts. I was frustrated and kind of knew I was overly nervous. So, I decided to create a character that got absolutely everything wrong with the process, but felt 100% optimistic and in control, to make myself feel better.
Oboe's youtube channel follows her through the application cycle in real time. Through the process I produced a video every week, which forced me to push my limits in terms of editing, filming, and scripting.
All footage kindly shot by Will Moran all else done by me in AfterEffects, Photoshop, and Premiere
Branding
I chose to film all of my videos in front of a green screen that would be transformed to a blue color. This is a style used by many educational You-tubers, and I thought it would be likely that Oboe would have tried to mimic this style to convey the sense of professionalism that oboe felt she had. Knowing that the color blue would convey knowledge and trust. The font choice was also chosen in that vain.
However, Oboe recognizes that this is a personal channel, which is why the channel bears her name and the logo her face, all of which undermine this sense of professionalism. I felt this appropriate for it is Oboe herself who undermines the professionalism and credibility of the videos content.
